Setting the stage<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3c0a50 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3c0a50\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"b966\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga kl iw ix gd km iz ja jb kn jd je jf ko jh ji jj kp jl jm jn de dt kq\"><span class=\"s kr ks kt dr ku kv kw kx ky ae\">T<\/span>he IoT and consumer hardware industry have seen multiple failures and a few exits over the last 12\u201318 months (while the B2B side has been doing a bit better overall) and some critics have been recently made to the industry\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/news\/archives\/2017\/11\/schneier_its_time_to.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to\u00a0<em class=\"jo\">slow down<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><p id=\"43eb\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In spite though of the current pushback, the s<span id=\"rmm\">e<\/span>ctor is still increasing and attracting capital and talents. Clearly, there are multiple reasons on why this is the case, but I firmly believe that one of those is the convergence of IoT and Artificial Intelligence with the Blockchain as the infrastructural backbone, which is unlocking the next step not only on the tech-side but also on the business one.<\/p><p id=\"c43d\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The industry has indeed evolved from merely creating\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">products<\/strong>, to create\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">networks of products<\/strong>\u00a0(namely,\u00a0<em class=\"jo\">Internet of Things<\/em>), to eventually create\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">Intelligent networks of products<\/strong>\u00a0(<em class=\"jo\">I-IOT<\/em>). The transition between the first and the second class was straightforward: I will create more (different) products and try to link them together. This generated many new possibilities, but it was clear from day one that it came with a series of issues hard to tackle, such as security\/privacy issues, validation\/authentication problems, and connectivity bottlenecks.<\/p><p id=\"dca8\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">And this is where AI and Blockchain come in. The second transition indeed was made possible through a combination of improvements in computing powers, device miniaturization, ubiquitous wireless connectivity and efficient algorithms (Porter and Heppelmann, 2014). The new class of smart products will be (and already are, to some extent) able to\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">monitor<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">control<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">optimize<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">automatize<\/strong>\u00a0processes and products with an accuracy previously not imaginable.<\/p><p id=\"3227\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Of course, as often happens, the bonus on integrating those fundamental technologies was that they ended up modifying IoT as much as IoT was impacting them in turn.<\/p><p><strong class=\"iu cr\">This convergence is however not accidental, but rather an inevitable necessity almost designed by default:<\/strong>AI needs data, IoT needs intelligence and insights, and both of them need security and transparent marketplaces.<\/p><p>The magnitude of this convergence is so high that will affect several sectors swinging from energy and manufacturing to home environment, robotics and drones, supply chain, logistics, and healthcare. Every field which is historically\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">data-rich but information-poor<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will be touched (or should I say brutally hit?) by those technologies.<\/p><p id=\"4cda\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I will explore how in the next few sections.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b99bb4b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b99bb4b\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2c8c0a4\" data-id=\"2c8c0a4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3119a9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3119a9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">II. How Blockchain is changing IoT<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17eaa70 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"17eaa70\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-539\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img-300x212.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f38d1cd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f38d1cd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span class=\"s kr ks kt dr ku kv kw kx ky ae\">T<\/span>he blockchain as a technology is basically providing the IoT stack with a\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">secure data infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0to capture and validate data. As simple as that. Or at least it is a simple statement that contains three different nuances:<\/p><ul class=\"\"><li id=\"d992\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Securing data better<\/strong>: the first one is indeed the concept of storing data securely. We know that blockchain protocols are not designed to heavily store data (they are indeed\u00a0<em class=\"jo\">ledgers<\/em>, not databases), but they can provide \u201c<em class=\"jo\">control points<\/em>\u201d to monitor data access (Outlier Ventures, 2018);<\/li><li id=\"b573\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Creating the right incentive structure<\/strong>: a blockchain can create the right incentive structure to share IoT data, which is something we are currently missing. Cross-sectional data have been proved to have the most disruptive impact when applied across different industries, but the problem of how and why sharing data in the first place remains. Blockchain (and tokenization) can be used to solve this economic dilemma, and once data are shared can be more easily validated, authenticated and secured;<\/li><li id=\"d773\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Creating a network of computers<\/strong>: distributing the workload and implement parallel computing tasks is something it is usually attributed to new AI or High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications, but a blockchain would be essential in this development authenticating and validating the single nodes of those networks (companies that are working in this space are\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/golem.network\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Golem<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/iex.ec\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">iExec<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onai.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Onai<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/hadron.cloud\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hadron<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/hypernetwork.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hypernet<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/deepbrainchain.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">DeepBrain Chain<\/a>, etc.).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c230700 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c230700\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">III. How Blockchain can change AI<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adbf44b elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"adbf44b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img2.jpeg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-540\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img2.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/img2-300x180.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46d0f69 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46d0f69\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"2607\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt kq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"s kr ks kt dr ku kv kw kx ky ae\">As<\/span>I have already previously mentioned, blockchain can affect AI in multiple ways:<\/p><ul class=\"\"><li id=\"d699\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Help AI explaining itself (and making us believe it)<\/strong>: the AI black-box suffers from an\u00a0<em class=\"jo\">explainability<\/em>\u00a0problem. Having a clear audit trail can not only improve the\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">trustworthiness<\/strong>\u00a0of the data as well as of the models but also provide a clear route to trace back the machine decision process (i.e., where data are coming from, who wrote the original algorithm, what data was used for training, etc.) and can establish the foundations for \u201c<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">algorithms standards<\/em><\/strong>\u201d (e.g., which main algorithms, packages, and framework have been developed using a specific training set). This is also essential in\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">machine-to-machine\u00a0<\/strong>interactions and transactions (Outlier Ventures, 2017), and provides a secure way to share data and coordinate decisions, as well as a robust mechanism to reach a quorum (extremely relevant for swarm robotics and multiple agents scenarios).\u00a0<a class=\"mh av bo\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/u\/35cd120eafde?source=post_page-----430284c3719a--------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob May<\/a>\u00a0expressed a similar concept in one of his last newsletters;<\/li><li id=\"ef65\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Increase AI effectiveness<\/strong>: a secure data sharing means more data (and more training data), and then better models, better actions, better results\u2026and better new data. A network effect is all that matter at the end of the day (<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/ai-blockchain.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">AIBlockchain<\/a>\u00a0is an example of a multi-application intelligence that uses different sets of data);<\/li><li id=\"9f4a\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Lower the market barriers to entry<\/strong>: let\u2019s go step by step. Blockchain technologies can secure your data. So why shouldn\u2019t you store all your data privately and maybe sell it? Well, you probably will. So first of all, blockchain will foster the\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">creation of cleaner and more organized personal data<\/strong>. Second, it will allow the emergence of\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">new marketplaces<\/strong>: a\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">data marketplace<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(low-hanging fruit, currently pursued by companies such as\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/oceanprotocol.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ocean Protocol<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/openmined.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">OpenMined<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/neuromation.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Neuromation<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.burstiq.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">BurstIQ<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atmatrix.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">AtMatrix<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/effect.ai\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Effect.ai,<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/datum.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Datum<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.streamr.com\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Streamr<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/en.deuro.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Deuro<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/datawallet.com\/#\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Datawallet<\/a>, etc.); a\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">models marketplace<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(e.g.,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/dbrain.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dbrain<\/a>, etc.); and finally even an\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">AI marketplace<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(examples are\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/singularitynet.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SingularityNET<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/fetch.ai\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fetch.ai<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/doc.ai\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">doc.ai<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/www.computable.io\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Computable Labs<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"dk il\" href=\"https:\/\/agorai.ai\/?p=home\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Agorai<\/a>, and similar). Hence, easy data-sharing and new marketplaces, jointly with blockchain data verification, will provide a more fluid integration that lowers the barrier to entry for smaller players and shrinks the competitive advantage of tech giants. In the effort of lowering the barriers to entry, we are then actually solving two problems, i.e., providing a\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">wider data access<\/strong>\u00a0and a more efficient\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">data monetization mechanism.\u00a0<\/strong>It is also possible that a blockchain-enabled AI will eventually create\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\">new organizational structures<\/strong>\u00a0for intelligent agents to cooperate or compete;<\/li><li id=\"caff\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Reduce catastrophic risks scenario<\/strong>: an AI coded in a DAO with specific smart contracts will be able to only perform those actions, and nothing more (it will have a limited action space).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b190b66 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b190b66\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">IV. How AI can change IoT<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05041be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"05041be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"22e8\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt kq\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"s kr ks kt dr ku kv kw kx ky ae\">A<\/span>I is feeding itself with the new stream of data coming from the physical world and the billions (if not trillions) of sensors and \u201c<em class=\"jo\">things<\/em>\u201d that are capturing and monitoring everything we do.<\/p><p id=\"759e\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn de dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">At the same time though, as soon as an AI starts making sense of IoT data flows, it will:<\/p><ul class=\"\"><li id=\"9d54\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga iv iw ix gd iy iz ja jb jc jd je jf jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Increase data efficiency:\u00a0<\/strong>an AI will inform back those sensors on what data should be captured and stored, and above all where those sensors should be placed to be both more efficient and more effective;<\/li><li id=\"8843\" class=\"is it fd iu b ga lz iw ix gd ma iz ja jb mb jd je jf mc jh ji jj md jl jm jn lw lx ly dt\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"iu cr\">Save costs<\/strong>: it is fair to think that an algorithm performance should be tested continuously, and once reached the\u00a0<strong class=\"iu cr\"><em class=\"jo\">optimal level with data marginal return approaching zero<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(i.e., a point in which adding more data does not improve the prediction outcome), an AI will not store or capture more data, resulting in energy, servers, computation, cloud, and infrastructural savings.
