{"id":1556,"date":"2021-08-09T06:13:31","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T06:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/?p=1556"},"modified":"2021-09-27T05:56:22","modified_gmt":"2021-09-27T05:56:22","slug":"kuda-the-african-challenger-bank-raises-55m-at-a-500m-valuation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tablutech.co.mz\/pt\/2021\/08\/09\/kuda-the-african-challenger-bank-raises-55m-at-a-500m-valuation\/","title":{"rendered":"Kuda, the African challenger bank, raises $55M at a $500M valuation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1556\" class=\"elementor elementor-1556\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-ef298f3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"ef298f3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5ce4e65\" data-id=\"5ce4e65\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d7b2bac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d7b2bac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"speakable-summary\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kudabank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kuda Bank<\/a>, the London-based, Nigerian-operating startup that is taking on incumbents in the country with a mobile-first, personalised and often cheaper set of banking services built on newer, API-based infrastructure, has been on a growth tear in the last several months, and to fuel its expansion, it has now raised another round of funding.<\/p><p>TechCrunch has learned, and confirmed with Kuda, that the startup has closed, via its London entity, a Series B of $55 million \u2014 money that it plans to use to double down not just on new services for Nigeria, but to prepare its launch into more countries on the continent, and in the words of co-founder and CEO Babs Ogundeyi, to build a new take on banking services for \u201cevery African on the planet.\u201d<\/p><p>The funding was made at a valuation of $500 million, and it comes on the back of some impressive early growth for the startup.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing a lot of resource deployment \u2026 in Nigeria. But now we are doubling down on expansion and the idea is to build a strong team for the expansion plans for Kuda,\u201d Ogundeyi told TechCrunch in an interview. \u201cWe still see Nigeria as an important market and don\u2019t want to be distracted so don\u2019t want to disrupt those operations too much. It\u2019s a strong market and competitive. It\u2019s one that we feel we need to have a strong hold on. So this funding is to invest in expansion and have more experience in the company with relation to expansion.\u201d<\/p><p>Kuda now has 1.4 million registered users, which is more than double the number it had in March when it had 650,000 registered users \u2014 a figure it revealed when announcing its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/03\/18\/kuda-raises-25m-more-led-by-valar-to-become-the-neobank-for-every-african-on-the-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Series A of $25 million<\/a>\u00a0led by Valar Ventures.<\/p><p>We understand that this latest Series B was a relatively quick inside round \u2014 that is, it\u2019s coming from existing investors. Co-led by Valar Ventures and Target Global, it also includes SBI and a number of previous angels also participating. Kuda was not proactively raising money at the time the Series B was initiated and closed.<\/p><p>\u201cWe felt that Babs and Musty\u201d \u2014 Musty Mustapha, the co-founder and CTO \u2014 \u201care ambitious on another level. For them, it was always about building a pan-African bank, not just a Nigerian leader,\u201d said Ricardo Sch\u00e4fer, the partner at Target who led the round for the firm. \u201cThe prospect of banking over 1 billion people from day one really stood out for me at the beginning.\u201d<\/p><div class=\"piano-inline-promo\">\u00a0<\/div><p>You might notice that it\u2019s only been four months since Kuda last announced a round of funding. Equity rounds raised in quick succession, sometimes just months apart, seems to be the order of the day at the moment, fueled in part by a lot of money being pumped into venture at the moment, but also by the state of the market. When the company in question is showing all the right growth metrics and is working in a particularly buzzy area, many will strike when the iron is hot. (GoPuff, which last week\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/07\/30\/gopuff-confirms-new-1b-cash-injection-at-a-15b-valuation-to-expand-its-instant-grocery-delivery-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed a $1 billion raise<\/a>\u00a0just months after a previous round, is another example of that happening from a different corner of the world.)<\/p><p>Neobanks \u2014 fintechs building a new generation disruptive of banking services based around more modern interfaces and infrastructure based around the concept of API-driven embedded finance \u2014 have been one of these areas, growing at a rate of nearly 50% annually in terms of revenues and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.co.uk\/news-releases\/neobanking-market-size-worth-722-60-billion-by-2028-cagr-47-7-grand-view-research-inc--808489566.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projected<\/a>\u00a0to be collectively a $723 billion market by 2028.<\/p><p>Within that, we\u2019re seeing a number of strong players emerging across the globe built on this model \u2014 Nubank out of Brazil, Revolut and N26 in Europe, WeBank in China, Varo and Chime in the U.S. among them. In this regard, Africa may be the last great untapped region when it comes to banking, one reason why Kuda is seeing strong adoption.<\/p><p>The writing has been on the wall for years. A report from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/industries\/financial%20services\/our%20insights\/african%20retail%20bankings%20next%20growth%20frontier\/roaring-to-life-growth-and-innovation-in-african-retail-banking-web-final.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McKinsey<\/a>\u00a0on banking in Africa in 2018 identified a surge of interest in financial services that were delivered digitally, and that growth would be driven by a rapidly evolving middle class of consumers, while at the same time an ongoing dearth of accessible financial services for the majority of the population with some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/05\/06\/payments-lending-and-neobanks-rule-fintechs-in-emerging-markets-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">300 million people still unbanked on the continent<\/a>. It\u2019s these three basic factors on which Kuda has built its own service.<\/p><p>Kuda is not the only one building and raising and growing. Others raising money for new fintech plays include payments company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/05\/30\/africa-has-another-unicorn-as-chipper-cash-raises-100m-series-c-led-by-svb-capital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chipper Cash<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/07\/30\/airtel-africa-gets-an-extra-200m-for-its-mobile-money-business-from-qia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Airtel Africa<\/a>, online lender\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/07\/01\/tiger-global-leads-42m-series-b-in-nigerian-credit-led-neobank-fairmoney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FairMoney<\/a>\u00a0and more.<\/p><p>However, Kuda is unique among the neobanks in that it is building its services with its own banking license in hand.<\/p><p>This means that it can be more flexible and fast-moving when it comes to creating new products or tweaking existing ones, and it gives the company another level of credibility in a region where those who were already banking with incumbents might be more wary of new players.<\/p><p>Indeed, Kuda\u2019s initial business model was built around providing banking services to people who still also held accounts with incumbent banks: People would have their salaries paid into their old accounts and then transferred out to be spent and used in other ways via their Kuda accounts. Ogundeyi said that this is gradually shifting and more people are now bringing both paying-in and paying-out to their Kuda accounts.<\/p><p>Ogundeyi would not say which countries would be Kuda\u2019s next targets. But he did note that its most recently launched product, Kuda\u2019s first move into credit by way of an overdraft allowance, is a sign of the things to come.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a unique product, an overdraft that we pre-qualify the most active users for,\u201d he said. In Q2 it qualified over 200,000 users and pushed out $20 million worth of credit.
